Pinoli pine nuts come from planted orchards of the European stone pine tree, (Pinus pinea), also sometimes known as the umbrella pine. The Marlborough region’s climate is very similar to parts of the Mediterranean, making it ideal for growing pine nut orchards.
Pinoli pine nuts are ivory-coloured, with a smooth, satiny surface, and a crisp bite. These are hallmarks of the freshness of the product, and demonstrate careful preparation of the kernels.
Pine nuts are rich in linoleic and pinolenic acid, both of which are the subject of research for their role in regulating blood pressure, suppressing appetite for those trying to control their weight and preventing and treating stomach ulcers. Pine nuts are also rich in protein, with the European stone pine nut having the highest protein content of all. As a result of the high protein content they have a lower oil content than other pine nuts.
They also contain antioxidants and vitamins, as well as lutein, which is believed to prevent disease and aging by eliminating free radicals. Pine nuts have almost no sodium, and contain other minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorous and iron. They also contain moderate amounts of dietary fibre.
